"MARMI DELLE ALPI APUANE" Project

In this web site are presented results from a project about marbles of the Alpi Apuane area, in northern Tuscany (Italy), from where the world famous "Carrrara marble" is quarried.

The project was carried out by the Centre for Geotechnologies of the University of Siena.

Aim of the project was to improve knowledge in:

• geological mapping of the marble outcrops in the Alpi Apuane Metamorphic complex;
• mapping of quarry debris ("ravaneti");
• studies on microfabric of marbles;
• disseminate cartographic information via webGIS services.

Documents resulting from this project are:

• geological maps of the marble types, at 1:10.000 scale;
• structural maps, at 1:10.000 scale;
• webGIS services for on-line viewing of maps (require Adobe Flash Player 9);
• text manuscript;
• results from earlier (ERTAG) projects on marble.
